Everyone has a story, but some voices need a lift to be heard. That’s how Veterans Storytelling Project started in 2015. Founder and Air Force veteran Sonya Padgett began with weekly writing workshops in Las Vegas, helping homeless veterans tell their stories through fiction, poetry and nonfiction. The writers called themselves, simply, Nevada Veterans Writing Group. In 2018, the workshops expanded to include women veterans. They quickly showed that telling stories involves more than just the written word. People do it through art, music and oral histories, too. Thus, the Veterans Storytelling Project was born. The mission remains the same: help military veterans find their voices and share their stories with the world.
